These nurses were first utilised in North Africa on Christmas Day 1942 to evacuate the wounded. Altogether 500 Flight Nurses served with 31 medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadrons world wide. They managed to evacuate a total of 1,176 048 casualties during WWII and only lost a total of 46 casualties en route during this period. 17 Flight Nurses lost their lives during the war.
